There are many reasons people come to Sarasota and Bradenton, but let's face it: getting some downtime is not one of them. When you have some of the country's most beautiful beaches to explore (on foot and on bike), and some of the Gulf Coast's most fascinating history to discover, and its most glorious countryside to see, there's not a lot of time to waste. Luckily, you can always recuperate from discovering the area's best beaches with-a day at the beach. Hey, it works for the residents and tourists who come to Sarasota-Bradenton in search of sun and sand, and it will work for you too.

Stephen "Dr. Beach" Leatherman, a Florida International University professor of Environmental Science and known authority on beaches, named nearby Siesta Key Beach as the best beach in the nation, and with its crystalline blue waters, and powder-soft white sand, you'll agree with his choice. Families pay thousands of dollars to experience it, and as a resident, it will be almost outside your front door. Lido Beach is another worthwhile trip. It's a bit wilder than the calm and placid waters of Siesta Key. Venice Beach will delight kids, who can take home the beach's many "souvenirs, " such as the shark's teeth and shells.

The best way to see Sarasota and Bradenton might be on a bicycle. The Legacy Trail and the Venetian Waterway Trail are good places to start. If you prefer two legs to two wheels, the De Soto National Memorial in Bradenton makes a great walking tour. This park, carefully-maintained, observes the invasion of Florida by Hernando de Soto. Don't worry, the version of Floridian history presented here is child-friendly. Kids can even step into a real suit of armor and pretend to be a conquistador. It's harder than it looks! Another great place to take the kids? The one-of-a-kind amusement park known around here as People at Play. The creators of this park had a truly original idea: gather bulldozers, excavators, and top-notch instructors in one place, and turn everyone loose!

If you prefer more recent history, visit the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. You and your family are definitely not the first to seek to make this beautiful Gulf Coast city your home. Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, two great American minds, thought along similar lines. A tour of their estates reveals how each drew inspiration from the other, and how their intellectual partnership played out in Florida.

Believe it or not, there is more to Sarasota and Bradenton than the beach. The area's farms will call to mind Old Florida, where citrus fruit- not beach tourism- was the most important industry in the state. Hunsader Farms specializes in vegetables and fall fun. Don't miss their Pumpkin Fest. Mixon Fruit Farms, however, is where you go for high-quality Florida oranges. This is one product that lives up to the hype: nothing beats a glass of their fresh orange juice. If you prefer to "look but don't touch" when it comes to the great outdoors, an afternoon at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens will hit the spot.
