Industrial Maintenance Mechanic Salary
An industrial machinery mechanic is an integral part of any manufacturing or assembly plant operation. These mechanics help ensure that automated machine tools and assembly robots work at peak efficiency and safety, and regularly repair, inspect, and adjust machinery to ensure that it operates within parameters which maximize safety, speed, and accuracy.
Typically, most workers in an industrial facility are required to immediately report any equipment malfunctions to engineering/repair departments, and an industrial machinery mechanic will be sent to examine and diagnose the problem. He/she will make any repairs or replacements as necessary and then put the equipment through a test process to ensure it is working properly and safely. All such repairs may be documented for plant safety and OSHA purposes, as well.
Plant managers with access to throughput reports may also notify these mechanics of marked decreases in efficiency of plant machinery. Again, the industrial mechanic will diagnose the root of the problem and inspect, repair, and test the machinery. When not engaged in active repair operations, industrial machinery mechanics may be expected to assist in or perform high-level technical inspections of industrial machinery within the facility and document their activities.
To work as a mechanic on industrial machinery, a person will typically seek out post-secondary school training from a technical school, which may involve working with machine parts, electrical work, and even computer diagnostics. Most industrial machinery mechanics work according to the shift rules of the company which employs them, and some 24-hour plants may require some mechanics to be available for overnight work.
